Am I A Good Candidate For Invisalign?

Interested in Invisalign treatment in Bankers Hill? Then check out this short article to learn if these clear aligners are the right solution for you!

What Is Invisalign, and How Does It Work?

Invisalign is a type of clear aligner designed to straighten teeth and even improve the health of your bite.

It works by applying constant pressure to your teeth to move them in a controlled fashion. The aligners are custom-made based on a scan of your teeth and a "map" of how they should migrate to correct their alignment.

Patients will wear multiple trays throughout their treatment, which are usually changed once every 2 weeks or so.

How to Know If You’re a Good Candidate for Invisalign

To get Invisalign, you’ll need to meet with a Bankers Hill dentist for a consultation, and then you can find out if you’re a good candidate for this type of therapy.

During your appointment, the dentist may look at several factors before recommending Invisalign, such as:

1. Malocclusion severity

Invisalign is great at treating minor, mild, and even moderate cases of tooth misalignment. In some cases, it can even handle bite issues such as crossbites or overbites.

However, severe cases of malocclusion may be too much for Invisalign. In these cases, patients could need braces. Also, if your jaw misalignment is skeletal in nature (caused by bone alignment, not tooth alignment), you may even need surgery to correct it.

2. Current oral health

Dr. Kerry will also look for cavities, gum disease, and other oral health issues. It’s not recommended to get Invisalign if you’re dealing with such oral health problems, since Invisalign can make them worse.

You’ll need to get some dental work done before being cleared for Invisalign therapy.

3. Oral hygiene habits

Invisalign needs a good oral hygiene routine to prevent increasing the risk for cavities or gum disease.

The removable aligners can trap bacteria and lead to a lot of these issues, so patients who already show signs of not brushing and flossing daily are usually not cleared for Invisalign.

4. Likelihood of complying with the treatment

Invisalign is a convenient type of therapy, but it does have some strict rules:

  • Daily brushing and flossing
  • Cleaning aligners daily
  • Wearing them for at least 22 hours a day
  • Taking them out before eating or drinking, etc.

If a patient cannot comply with these rules, then their treatment often proves ineffective. This is usually the case for small children, who may take out their aligners at will and not properly clean them as required.
